The agency's counseling services began in 1960 with a grant from United Way to provide affordable counseling to people who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Providing affordable counseling is a value we maintain today as strongly as we did in 1960.
The people who come to us for counseling do so primarily because they have life situation problems that are seriously affecting them psychologically and socially; they are not suffering from severe and chronic mental illness. Our clients are people who come to us seeking help in resolving a variety of issues that are primarily affecting the quality of their family, social, and work relationships. For example, they seek help with family and social conflicts, parent-child concerns, painful losses, debilitating anxieties, seriously troublesome compulsions and addictions, sexual problems, and concerns stemming from previous or current abuse and low self-esteem. Emotional pain and social-behavioral dysfunction are the primary reasons people seek our counseling services.
