If you are considering bankruptcy, before you file you must receive a Certificate of Counseling from an agency approved* by the United States Trustee. Horizons is the only agency located in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Corridor that provides this counseling in-person or by telephone. During this mandatory counseling you will receive information on the bankruptcy process as well as discuss the possible consequences of filing and the alternatives you may have, based on your personal financial situation. The fee for this counseling is $50.00 for an individual and $65.00 for a couple filing a joint petition and attending the same session. The fee may be waived in certain circumstances.

Bankruptcy Debtor Education

If you have already filed bankruptcy, you are required to attend a Debtor Education class that has been approved* by the United States Trustee. Horizons is the only agency in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Corridor that provides these classes in person or through the internet. Our class, Money in Motion, satisfies the requirements for Debtor Education, and will provide you with the information and tools to successfully manage your money in the future. Money in Motion can be taken in the classroom, or as an online course. The cost for the course is $25 for an individual and $30 for a couple filing a joint petition. The fee may be waived in certain circumstances.
